Tell me a story

One of the things that we find makes for a more engaging display is that there are stories everywhere in the display. The easiest way to hint at a story is with the epitaph on a tombstone. This is a pretty common tactic for folks to use. Even if you just have simple names like, “Claude Inhalf” that’s the start of a story for anyone with an imagination.

This tombstone is guarded by two gargoyles. So, the epitaph hints that something is not normal about the stone guardians. In addition to the epitaph, there will be scratch marks around his name, and on the pedestals the gargoyles rest upon.

Rather than attempt to freehand carve the text into the tombstone foam I print the design on paper and trace over the outlines of the letters with a pencil or pen making sure to press hard enough to leave an impression in the tombstone’s foam. Once the transfer is complete, the actual carving is handled using a Dremel tool or plunge router.
